How does yoga benefit your child?

In the last decade, yoga has become one of the most popular exercise practices in the United States. A 2016 study featured in the magazine Yoga Journal showed that some 36.7 million Americans practiced yoga, almost double the number of practitioners in 2012. Yoga’s popularity can be attributed to a number of factors, including its health benefits, promotion of long-term wellness, and non-competitive, meditative nature. And it’s not just for adults; there are many ways kids benefit from yoga as well.

Developing Body Awareness and Body Confidence

Yoga promotes strength, coordination, and flexibility, but it also develops a child’s sense of what their body can do when they put those things together. Children who practice yoga learn to be confident in their bodies and the connection between the mental and the physical. This can help children deal with the physical stresses of growing up and set them up for a lifetime of healthy habits.

Improving Concentration

One of the core aspects of yoga practice is a focus on the body and especially the breath. Teaching kids to be present in the moment and concentrate on their breathing is a powerful way to teach and instill focus. With all the distractions and increasing pressure inherent in modern life, especially for kids, this can be an invaluable skill to learn at an early age.

Non-competitive Physical Activity

There are plenty of lessons and skills children can learn from competitive physical activity. Not all kids, however, thrive in a competitive environment. It’s important for those kids to know that traditional youth sports like basketball and baseball are not the only options for exercise. Yoga offers kids the benefits of group physical activity in a relaxed and supportive environment.
